What makes top grain farms tick? Better yields, cost control or size? Do they run machinery on the cheap? Do they hit marketing highs? Do they just happen to farm better ground?
"Chase the big rabbits--marketing, machinery, labor and agronomic management," Panora, Iowa farm financial consultant Moe Russell advised attendees at Commodity Classic in Florida a few weeks ago. "It's better than chiseling your fertilizer dealer for an extra $1/acre savings." Russell has studied his own database of clients to hone those $100/acre differences.
University of Illinois Economist Nick Paulson tried to distill the management secrets of the highest profit grain clients in the state's Farm Business Farm Management Association record system between 2005 and 2009. In his latest analysis posted on farmdocdaily this week, Paulson found top operators earned $180/acre in 2005 more than their peers in the bottom quartile. This advantage jumped to $280/acre in 2008 and 2009, however, once volatile, demand-driven markets kicked in.
The main message is that "it seems to be extremely difficult for grain farms in Illinois to consistently earn returns in the top quartile even over a relatively short 5-year period," Paulson says. Only 3.2% of the farm operations ranked in the top 25% category of earners in each of those five years.
One reason is that there's not a big Bell Curve between the best and worst farmers financially, at least in the Illinois database. You just need to hit singles, not home runs, in a lot of areas to stay competitive. On corn yields, the spread between the top 25% and the bottom 25% ranged from 9% better (in 2006 and 2009) to 20% in 2005. Marketing returns scored in an even narrower range--from 3.5% better for corn's top performers in 2007 to 10% in 2008. Average gaps over the five-year period worked out to dimes per bushel not dollars.
The Illinois study might make you conclude marketing isn't an area top farmers can exploit. Read the management classic, "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" and you'll see it's tough for anyone to beat market averages long term.
But Mark Welch, a Texas A&M AgriLife economist who teaches a Master Marketing course for DTN, isn't giving up. Before 2006, the price of Dec corn futures over its contract life varied less than about $1/bu. and often under 50 cents. In 2008, that ranged from a low of $2.60 to a high of $7.96. Ranges of $3 to $4/bu. during the marketing season might be more normal now, Welch observes. Logic would tell you there's bound to be bigger spreads between farmers' average prices in the future, too.
So implementing some simple marketing techniques to trigger pre-harvest sales can greatly improve results over harvest-time prices, Welch has found. Since 2005, he's studied five marketing styles to see how a 1,000-acre corn grower with 180 bu. yields would have fared. By his calculations, just timing sales to match the traditional seasonal peaks (selling 20% March 1, June 15, Aug. 1 and Oct. 15) would have returned a grower more than $200,000 over selling at harvest since 2005. Tweaking that using a moving average earned $274,050 more than harvest sales.
Those techniques were not the top winners every year, but they were never the class goats either. Technology and astute farm operators are narrowing the gaps in production agriculture. Can marketing be the next frontier for those who want to excel? There's certainly more money on the table than 25 years ago.

How OncoSec opens ups skin cancer cells to drugs | BioTuesday

It?s really quite simple, local and very targeted.
?We inject the surface tumor with a therapeutic agent and then administer electric pulses through a generator that create temporary pores in the membrane of cells in the selected tissue, dramatically increasing the uptake of the agent for its cancer-killing benefits,? Punit Dhillon, CEO of OncoSec Medical (OTCBB:ONCS), says in an interview with BioTuesdays.com.
?We?ve seen an over 4,000-fold increase in the uptake of the agent, and when the electric pulses are stopped, the pores close, and the agent is trapped in the cell allowing it to perform its intended functions.?
As a result of this targeted approach, he says the amount of drug needed to induce cell death is substantially lower than the dose required in traditional chemotherapy. And the reduced amount of a locally delivered drug diminishes or eliminates the harmful side effects commonly associated with traditional chemotherapy, which is delivered systemically.
?While the concept is simple on the surface, there?s a lot going on at the cellular level,? he adds.
Known as electroporation, the OncoSec Medical System (OMS) platform has two approaches: OMS ElectroImmunotherapy and OMS ElectroChemotherapy. While using different anti-cancer drugs, both techniques have shown selective destruction of cancerous cells and tumors in early-and late-stage trials, while sparing healthy normal tissue in the treated areas.
Mr. Dhillon contends the technology is designed to ?address the drawbacks of conventional therapies by being tissue sparing; providing potential functional, cosmetic and quality of life benefits; being less invasive and reducing side effects; and potentially reducing both treatment and post-treatment costs.?
Electroporation Enhances Therapeutic Potency
The ?ElectroOncology? concept traces its roots to Inovio Pharmaceuticals where Mr. Dhillon led an employee spin-out of the technology, existing clinical data and IP to create OncoSec in March 2011.
According to Mr. Dhillon, Inovio had invested a significant amount of funds and effort in the development of the technology before it was acquired by OncoSec. ?And we have been able to leverage this experience by quickly progressing into Phase 2 clinical trials for our electroimmunotherapy program as well as partnering discussions for our electrochemotherapy program.?
OMS ElectroChemotherapy is a targeted ablation therapy, which utilizes the OMS to locally deliver bleomycin, an approved anti-cancer drug, to the tumor. The therapy preferentially kills targeted cancer cells while sparing surrounding normal healthy tissue.
OMS ElectroChemotherapy had been tested in over 400 patients in 13 countries and at more than 50 clinical sites before Inovio discontinued the program in a corporate restructuring. ?Through the asset acquisition, we accumulated a significant database of clinical data in a variety of tumor types,? Mr. Dhillon says.
The therapy has been developed up to Phase 3 clinical trials in the U.S. for the treatment of recurrent head and neck cancer and in Phase 1/2 for the treatment of recurrent breast cancer. In addition, Phase 4 pre-marketing studies to support the commercialization of OMS in Europe were also performed for the treatment of primary and recurrent head and neck cancers and cutaneous skin cancers.
Mr. Dhillon says that in previous clinical studies with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer patients, OMS ElectroChemotherapy achieved objective response rates of 99% and complete response rates of 89%.
?Given that there are over two million new cases of non-melanoma skin cancers diagnosed each year in the U.S., the therapy provides an effective and cost efficient alternative to surgery, without the removal of healthy tissue, which minimizes disfigurement and functional loss,? he contends.
Moreover, the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer is rapidly rising in young adults because of increased sun exposure.
Since acquiring the assets a year ago, the company has been working to compile and analyze data from the Phase 3 and 4 studies carried out in the U.S. and Europe.
Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer
The Phase 4 head and neck cancer results, carried out in Europe, will be presented at a medical conference in Poland to take place April 18 to 21. An interim analysis of two randomized Phase 3 trials, comparing OMS ElectroChemotherapy with surgery in recurrent head and neck cancer, will be presented at a medical conference in Toronto to take place July 21 to 25.
?With this data, we expect to finalize our clinical development plan and move forward with commercializing the OMS ElectroChemotherapy platform with a partner, either regionally or globally,? Mr. Dhillon says. He figures the therapy has a conservative market potential of more than $1 billion a year to treat various solid tumors and hopes to announce a partnership later this year.
OncoSec?s corporate focus is skin cancer, but the technology can be applied to other solid tumors of the head and neck, breast, liver and pancreas. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in his or her lifetime. In the case of melanoma, there were an estimated 123,000 new cases in 2011, resulting in some 10,000 deaths.
OMS ElectroImmunotherapy uses electroporation and a DNA cytokine called interleukin-12 (DNA IL-12), which is known to prompt the body?s innate and adaptive immune systems to seek out and kill cancer cells.
In an earlier Phase 1 melanoma study with 24 patients in the U.S., the therapy was shown to be safe and effective. Some 53% of patients demonstrated a partial response rate, with 100% clearance of distant, untreated tumors in 16% of patients.
US Phase I Melanoma Trial; Patient A - Complete Response
The study also determined there were no increased levels of IL-12 or interferon-gamma in blood serum, ?which is important in showing that the therapy has no toxicity issues,? Mr. Dhillon says.
?Results from our Phase 1 study demonstrated that DNA IL-12 and electroporation has the potential to establish a new standard of care for the treatment of late-stage metastatic melanoma,? he adds.
Last month, OncoSec began dosing patients in two Phase 2 trials of late-stage metastatic melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). A third Phase 2 clinical trial in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) is scheduled to start in April. A total of 67 patients will be enrolled in the three studies.
CTCL and MCC are rare forms of skin cancer. CTCL is very aggressive and late-stage disease can be lethal, while MCC is three times more deadly than melanoma.
OncoSec expects to release interim data from the three trials in the fourth quarter of this year. If the final data, which are due in 2013, are successful, the company plans to file an Investigational New Drug Application with the FDA in 2013 to begin a pivotal trial in one or more of the skin cancer indications.
Mr. Dhillon says DNA IL-12 and electroporation are comparable to or exceed response rates of other approaches to melanoma, including Bristol-Myers? Yervoy and Genentech?s Zelboraf, which were both approved last year.
He says Yervoy has not shown much improvement in response rates, compared with earlier treatments using interferon and Dacarbazine. While it has increased survival by eight to ten months, it also exhibits severe side effects. Response rates for Zelboraf exceed Yervoy, he notes, but the drug is limited to a certain patient population. Patients also can develop resistance to the drug, and when they discontinue treatment, melanoma reoccurs.
?With DNA IL-12, we have not seen any signs of drug resistance, and with a low dose, we hope to demonstrate a better safety profile than other products currently available,? Mr. Dhillon says. ?Our less invasive treatments are designed to give patients with life-threatening cancers the ability to have a higher quality of life.?

The late-1940s to the mid-1960s was a time of optimism and prosperity for America. The government passed the Serviceman?s Readjustment Act (also known as the G. I. Bill) in 1944, which offered a wide range of benefits for returning veterans, including business loans, low-cost mortgages for homes, and payments for college tuition. It gave veterans excellent control over their personal finances, and the opportunity to establish prosperous post-war lives.
America was not the only country that felt this influence. Canada underwent a baby boom as well; Canadians define it as the timespan from 1947 to 1966. Here, the correlation between returning soldiers and a rise in births is obvious, as most Canadian soldiers came home about a year after America?s soldiers.
European countries experienced this as well. The majority of the European countries involved in the war saw a dramatic increase in births between 1946 and 1948. Again, this generally corresponds to the years in which the majority of their veterans returned home.
Today, the average baby boomers age is between 48 and 66. The majority of this demographic is currently leaving the work force and entering retirement. The results of this phenomenon are evident in today?s society; the business of Social Security is at the highest levels that it has ever reached; the science of gerontology is constantly expanding; and the number of retirement homes for senior citizens in America continues to grow. In the 2030s, the third decade of the 21st century, a brief decrease in the general population is to be expected, when this demographic will reach the average projected life expectancy.

In my Retail class at the University of Texas at Tyler, we have the unique opportunity for real world experience. And that comes in the form of the retail lab, maybe you've seen it? The tiny market inside the business building that looks like a store? Yes that's the one, that's the retail lab, and it's main purpose is training us in retail management and retail marketing. I've had prior experience in a retail environment so I'm having to dust off a lot of my old skills, unfortunately slacking and sleeping in the break room is not part of the lesson plan so not all of my skills are transferable. It's a unique opportunity to be able to take what we are learning and apply it right then and there. I haven't had a lab class in a long time, and have never had a business lab, so here's to hoping it all works out!

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The young American boy sums up what his father does for a living: "You stop the bad guys from being mean."
Yes, the father says, but who are the bad guys? The child thinks, then offers a guess: "Star Wars people?"
Though half a world away from this preschooler's American upbringing, the truth is far more sinister.
The bad guys are Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, a brutal Central Africa militia that has kidnapped thousands of children and forced them to become sex slaves, fight as child soldiers and kill family members during a 26-year campaign of terror.
The father-son conversation is part of a 30-minute video that has rocketed through cyberspace since its release Monday on YouTube. It had been viewed more than 40 million times by late Thursday, propelled by celebrity tweets and fans on Facebook and Twitter, especially teens and young adults.
The video's premise is that people here in America ? and the world beyond ? have the power to stop Kony, if only they are willing to spread the word through the power of social media. Called Kony 2012, the goal is to see Kony captured by the end of this year.
The father, Jason Russell, is the co-founder of Invisible Children, an anti-LRA advocacy group, and the film's director. At one point in the film, he asks his son, Gavin, what he thinks should be done about Kony.
"Stop him," Gavin responds.
Then, in one of the video's many slick moments, the boy's words are quickly echoed by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, where Kony is wanted for crimes against humanity.
"Stop him," Luis Moreno-Ocampo says on camera, "and (that will) solve all the problems."
Despite an International Criminal Court arrest warrant and the deployment last fall of 100 U.S. Special Forces to four Central African countries to help advise in the fight against Kony, until now, few Americans knew who he was.
To those 99 percent, Russell poses this challenge: Make Kony and his crimes so "famous" that governments view it as imperative that the mission to capture him succeeds.
Celebrities ? and teens ? have quickly joined the cause.
"Even if its 10 minutes ... Trust me, you NEED to know about this!" tweeted Rhianna.
"This is not a joke. This is serious. TOGETHER we can (hash)MakeAChange and (hash)STOPKRONY -- help another kid in need!" Justin Bieber tweeted.
"Have supported with $'s and voice and will not stop," tweeted Oprah.
Data collected by YouTube show the video is most popular with boys and girls ages 13 to 17, as well as young men ages 18 to 24.
Invisible Children's critics say the San Diego-based group oversimplifies a complex issue. In a rebuttal posted on its website, the group acknowledges the video overlooks many nuances but says it sought to explain the conflict "in an easily understandable format." It called the film a "first entry point."
"It's something we can all agree on regardless of your political background," said Ben Keesey, the group's 28-year-old chief executive officer. "There are few times where problems are black and white. There's lots of complicated stuff in the world, but Joseph Kony and what he's doing is black and white."
The LRA began its attacks in Uganda in the 1980s, when Kony sought to overthrow the government. Since being pushed out of Uganda several years ago, the militia has terrorized villages in Congo, the Central Africa Republic and South Sudan.
"Kony is a monster. He deserves to be prosecuted and hanged," Col. Felix Kulayigye, spokesman for Uganda's military, told The Associated Press.
Because of the intensified hunt for Kony, LRA forces ? once thousands strong ? have diminished in number, splitting into smaller groups that can travel the jungle more easily. Experts estimate the militia now has about 250 fighters.
Attacks continue, with victims mutilated by machetes, their faces slashed into grotesque shapes. Women are raped and killed. Young girls are forced into sexual slavery.
Jolly Okot was abducted in 1986. The then-18-year-old could speak English, so she was valuable to the militants, who also forced her into sex slavery.
Today, Okot is the Uganda country director for Invisible Children. She said the group is helping 800 people affected by LRA violence to attend high school and college. The program has given hope to kids who previously dropped out of school.
"The most exciting thing about this film is that I'm so grateful that the world has been able to pay attention to an issue that has long been neglected," she said. "I think it is an eye-opener and I think this will push for Joseph Kony to be apprehended, and I think justice will get to him."
Moreno-Ocampo said it has been hard to raise public awareness about Kony since issuing the arrest warrant against him in 2005.
"Kony is difficult. He is not killing people in Paris or in New York. Kony is killing people in Central African Republic, no one cares about him," Moreno-Ocampo told the AP. "These young people from California mobilizing this effort is incredible, exactly what we need."
Still, the burst of attention has brought scrutiny, including over the ratio of Invisible Children's spending on aid and its rating by the site Charity Navigator, as well as criticism of a 2008 photo of three members holding guns alongside troops in what is now South Sudan.
In a response posted on the Internet, the group said it spends about 80 percent of its funds on programs that further its mission, 16 percent on administration and about 3 percent on fundraising. The group said its accountability score is low because it has only four independent voting members on its board of directors, but is seeking a fifth.
The group's website www.kony2012.com prominently displays the faces of 20 celebrities ? from Warren Buffett and Bill O'Reilly to Tim Tebow and Stephen Colbert ? asking viewers to click on them to send a message urging support. It also shows 12 politicians from across the ideological spectrum.
In the video, Russell tells of meeting a Ugandan boy named Jacob who watched LRA fighters kill his brother. The American promises the African child he will do whatever he can to help. Nearly a decade later, Jacob is part of Invisible Children's campaign to bring awareness of the atrocities to college campuses in America.
The film opens with Gavin's birth, and Russell's message that in today's interconnected world, "where you live should not determine whether you live." If Gavin, born in American, can have a happy upbringing, Jacob should too.
"At the end of my life I want to say that the world we left behind is one Gavin can be proud of, one that doesn't allow Joseph Konys and child soldiers," Russell says. "A place where children no matter where they live, have a childhood free from fear."
Gavin shakes his blond hair and says: "I'm going to be like you dad. I'm going to come with you to Africa."

When Midnight Comes: Honing Your Craft: Recommended Reading
I've mentioned it before and I'll say it again, no matter what genre you write, no matter your skill level, or natural talent for words, the smart writer is always looking for ways to hone their craft. Whether you attend workshops or read books on writing, all can benefit.
I'd like to take a moment to share a few of the books I recommend to any fiction writer, aspiring or published.
Writing The Novel by Lawrence Block
Originally published in 1985 by a master of the hard-boiled detective story, Writing The Novel is now available as a Nook book and is worth the price of admission. I cut my teeth on this book back when and still enjoy thumbing through my highlighted and dog-eared copy now and again.
There are no easy formulas or trick ponies in Mr. Block's book, only sound advice based on the over 100 books he's written and published.
GMC: Motivation & Conflict by Debra Dixon
Written in 1996, Ms. Dixon's book delineates the need for plot structure in fiction and breaks it down into three of the main components. This book is great for any fiction writer, and is continually a recommended read within the romance industry.
If you plan to get your own copy, I suggest buying the book from Gryphon Books directly since it's cheaper than buying it anywhere else.
The Screenwriter's Workbook and
The Screenwriter's Problem Solver by Syd Field
While these two books are not the only great books Mr. Field's written, they are the two I found most helpful. Just because your aim is writing a novel, don't dismiss the value of learning from other writing sources. Screenwriters are some of the most undervalued and incredibly talented authors out there, and they have some wonderful lessons to share that you can apply to your own writing.
Speaking of lessons from screenwriters, two of my favorite collections of writerly wisdom are by the late Blake Snyder, whose books are filled with warmth, humor, and his passion for sharing and explaining something he called the "Beat Sheet".
Save The Cat and Save the Cat Strikes Back by Blake Synder
Another book in the series, Save The Cat Goes To The Movies, breaks down some of the most popular movies of the past few decades and shows where each falls within Blake's categories and on the Beat Sheet.

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Dunkin' Brands Inc. said Monday that NBA superstar Lebron James has agreed to promote Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins ice cream in Asia where the company has about a third of its stores.
James will promote Dunkin's brands in China, Taiwan, India and South Korea through advertisements, online media and in-store marketing, Dunkin' said. James will also make personal appearances in Asia after the season ends in June.
Dunkin' executive John Costello declined to give the terms of the deal, but said it was multiyear and worth multimillions of dollars.
"I'm really excited about partnering with Dunkin' Brands and connecting with the huge community of basketball fans" in Asia, James said in a statement.
James, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, has the best-selling basketball jersey and shoe in China and has visited Asia four times. China is the NBA's second-biggest market after the U.S., and NBA players often visit Asia on behalf of shoe companies or other sponsors during the offseason.
Dunkin' is hoping James' popularity will help boost sales in a region where it has about 5,400 stores, or about a third of its global total. Dunkin' plans to add at least 250 stores in Asia during the next two to three years, Chief Executive Nigel Travis said.
Dunkin' opened its first restaurant in Vietnam in December and plans to open its inaugural store in India later this year, Travis said. South Korea has the most Dunkin' stores in Asia with about 1,900 while Japan has 1,087 ? all Baskin-Robbins.
The company plans to boosts its total shops in China by 100 over the next few years from a current 150, Travis said.
The James deal "is Asia focused and reflects our commitment to Asia," Travis told reporters in Singapore. "Lebron has a strong commitment to building his relationship in Asia so he's definitely planning multiple trips to Asia in the offseason this year."
The popularity of basketball in Asia has grown during the last decade, in part because of former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming of China, who retired last year. New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin has become an overnight sensation in Asia, especially in China and Taiwan. Lin, whose parents were born in Taiwan, is the first Asia-American player in the NBA.
Costello said Dunkin is happy to have snagged James, who has been an All-Star for eight seasons.
Lin "certainly is an exciting new player with 20 games to his history," said Costello, who is Dunkin's chief global marketing and innovation officer. "But Lebron James has had a fabulous nine years. We think the excitement around Jeremy Lin will actually create more awareness in Asia."
James, 27, is in his ninth NBA season since turning professional straight out of high school. His Miami Heat lost in last year's finals to the Dallas Mavericks.

In fact, most venture capitalists will at least require being on your Board of Directors. These investors have the same goals as you, to grow a successful business and exit. Therefore their partial ownership in your company does not harm you.
Also, venture capitalists do present a helpful amount of capital in which to invest. When a firm offers the notion it has the ability to help a business grow, the expansion of the business could prove even more expansive. Furthermore, venture capitalists have the tools and network place to help expand growth.
Finally, to raise venture capital opens the door to concentrate on growing a business without the hassle of worrying about any short term payables. Through venture capital, you will never have to worry about any interest or principle payments which debt capital would mandate. Any company that is currently growth focused and not hugely profitable will find this makes a huge difference.

Back To The Bounty Story: Possible Legal Ramifications? - Daily ...
Apologies if it seems like this is turning into Bounty Central, but hey. . .there's a dearth of news on the Vikings front at the moment, and this is a relatively big story.
Our friends at SI.com have put together a story on some of the potential legal ramifications of what has gone on with this particular story. A couple of these things are particularly interesting. First, there's the matter of potential tax evasion when it comes to the various "bounties" that were doled out.
Players who received bounty payments should have reported them as taxable income; even if the payments arose because of criminal activity, such "ill gotten gains" are taxable. Failure to pay one's full share of taxes constitutes tax evasion. The IRS and Louisiana Department of Revenue are likely following the bounty system scandal with a watchful eye.
It may seem like a stretch, to be sure, but remember what they always say about tax evasion. . .that's how they got Al Capone.
The more interesting one is the possibility of second-degree battery charges being filed, should a player choose to file them.
It is even possible that a Saints player could be charged with second degree battery. This is a more serious type of battery, which carries a potential five-year prison sentence and which refers to intentionally inflicting serious bodily injury. Under Louisiana law, "serious bodily injury" refers to causing another person extreme physical pain, unconsciousness, or risk of death. A bounty to injure someone so seriously that he's carted off the field arguably rises to second degree battery.
There is a three years statute of limitation for battery charges, which means that bounties -- which took place over the last three seasons -- occurred recently-enough for criminal prosecution.
Now, as the article says, it's not often that players would file a lawsuit for on-field injuries and things of that nature. . .but, you know, I can't help but wonder if a Mr. B. Favre of Hattiesburg, Mississippi would be interested in such a thing. After all, he's officially retired now, so he's got plenty of spare time. Personally, I know that if one of my opponents threw $10,000 on the table and said, "This goes to whoever takes this guy out," I might be inclined to take my chances in a court of law with that. I'm aware of what he said a couple of days after the 2009 NFC Championship Game. . .but maybe learning that somebody put a bounty on his head would change his tune a bit.
Just throw it on the pile, I guess. And what a pile it is.
