Sweden's H&M says Q3 dented by late summer heat

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish fashion retailer Hennes and Mauritz announced Thursday plans to ramp up its expansion in the coming months, even though problems associated with Europe's debt crisis and a heat wave in a number of its key markets capped earnings in the third quarter.

The Stockholm-headquartered group posted a net profit of 3.6 billion kronor ($549 million) in the three months between June and August, up just under 1 percent from 3.59 billion kronor in the year-ago period. Revenues rose to 33.57 billion kronor from 31.51 billion kronor.

The group ? the world's second-largest clothing retailer in terms of sales after Spain's Inditex, the owner of Massimo Dutti and Zara ? said its performance was dented by economic difficulties in many European countries, a late-summer heat wave in much of Europe as well as currency fluctuations. However, some relief was provided by cheaper cotton prices.

"Conditions for the fashion retail industry continued to be challenging in many markets in the third quarter ? both as regards the weather and the macroeconomic climate, with austerity measures and restrained consumption," CEO Karl-Johan Persson said, adding that lower than expected sales could "primarily" be blamed on the heat wave.

The company's share price dropped 5.3 percent to 236.50 kronor in early trading on the Stockholm stock exchange.

Even so, the group said it continues to grab market share and revealed plans to open 300 new stores this year, up from a previously forecast 275.

But H&M has delayed the launch of its online shop in the United States to the middle of 2013 instead of the second half of this year. The company said it simply needs more time to prepare that offering.

It also said it plans to launch a new fashion brand, & Other Stories, in the first half of next year, which will be located in separate stores. The clothes will focus more on quality and will be higher priced than its normal fashion lines.

Daniel Ovin, an analyst at CAI Cheuvreux Nordic in Stockholm, said H&M's third quarter performance was a "disappointment," especially with regard to the fall in the company's gross margin to 58.2 percent from 58.6 percent.

"I would have thought that the lower cotton prices would have helped there," he said.

The joyful labors of a very happy home ? Youth Villages ? News ...

Foster parents Bobby, right, and Johhny, left, with Jada, Chase and Joseph

Bobby?s day usually begins around six in the morning, preparing meals and getting the children and her husband, Johnny, ready for their day. To say her home is a whirlwind of activity for most of the day is an understatement.

For Bobby and Johnny, it?s a mission of sorts. They both had children from previous marriages, but their union was more than a simple marriage. It was the grand opening of their home.

?It wasn?t like ?those are your kids and these are mine,?? Johnny said. ?It?s all of us together. We?re all in it together.?

During the past four years, they?ve opened their home to more than 10 foster children, recently adopting three ? Chase, 15; Jada, 8; and Joseph, 3. Both coming from abusive and neglectful childhoods, Bobby and Johnny decided their home was going to be a haven, a safe place for children who needed attention, care and love.

?I?ve always wanted to protect abused children,? Bobby said. ?I wanted to help children who?ve been mistreated.?

Chase was removed from his home because of abuse and neglect. He was also physically and verbally aggressive. His first foster placement didn?t work well, but Bobby and Johnny were patient and Chase slowly transformed. He?s part of the family, and helps care for his younger sister and brother.

Joseph was born to a drug-addicted mother. He cried and wailed incessantly while his body weaned itself from the narcotics. He had to be soothed and held constantly. His sleep was erratic. Bobby and Johnny never wavered.

?We just held him and loved him,? Johnny said. ?There wasn?t anything else we could do.?

There are no signs of those troubles now, as Joseph and his freshly cut Mohawk hairdo speed from room to room and down the hallway with his sister. He laughs and plays just like any other 3-year-old boy.

Bobby runs children to doctor?s appointments and other things. In addition to the adopted children, they?re still foster parents to three other children. She calls them all by pet names and maintains an unending supply of affection and energy. To nearly everyone who goes in and out their front door, they?re called Mamaw and Papaw. But there are still standards.

?Oh yes, we?ve got rules,? Bobby said. ?We expect good grades in school, manners, and being respectful of adults and other children. They all have chores to do to help around the house. We expect them to mind.?

The children?s bedtime is usually around 8 in the evening. Bobby and Johnny end the evening cleaning and straightening up the circus of the previous 14 hours.

Most days, Bobby?s evening continues through to the wee hours of the next day.

?Having foster children is like this: It?s a lot of news, and it can be bad one day, good the next day and then great another day,? she said. ?It?s a lot of work and you have to be flexible. But we love all of them. It?s difficult sometimes when they leave ? you want them to go home to their families, but you get attached and you?re sad to see them leave.?

And then the next morning begins the daily routine. Bobby and Johnny said they?d take in more children if they could.

The children are safe. They?re loved. Most important, they?re happy.

Pinball as a model for dealing with grief

ScienceDaily (Sep. 14, 2012) ? The process of grieving can be compared to the workings of a pinball machine, where mourners' movement between different stages of grief such as shock and depression may be unpredictable, according to authors writing in September's issue of Mental Health Practice journal.

Margaret Baier of Baylor University, Waco, Texas and Ruth Buechsel of Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas, say they are not trying to suggest grief is a game or downplay the experience, but that the metaphor can help people understand that grieving is not a linear process.

As on a pinball machine, there are triggers which can prolong or even restart the process. For the mourner these could be the anniversary of a death or a special event they used to share with their loved one. This model can be used in therapy by healthcare professionals to help people understand that their responses are normal. It may also be adaptable to help those coping with separation, divorce, loss of employment or financial loss, say the authors.

They identify numerous models and factors for understanding grief in the literature as helpful in predicting coping and adjustment in bereavement. However, they say, many of the models are misinterpreted as linear. Grieving patients often speak of feeling as though they are 'bouncing' from one stage to another, which elicited the image of a pinball.

They say their model contains elements of the seminal work by Kubler-Ross (1969) but illustrates the process in a way that helps bereaved people see and understand their emotional processes, which helps them normalise and move through the experience of grief. This normalisation may help people to relax and better process grief, make sense of a seemingly chaotic experience, and be prepared when grief is triggered by other events or prolonged, as in the process of complicated grief.

NEWS: NBA Live 13 delayed

EA Sports hasn't released a licensed NBA videogame since 2010, when the disastrous NBA Elite 11 was aborted. The company is planning to release their first basketball game in years, but it seems that fans will have to wait a little longer, as NBA Live 13 has been delayed from its early October launch window.

"Many fans have been anticipating an early October launch, but our plan is to release at a later date. We will share more information in the future," posted EA Sports in a press statement.

Rival basketball game NBA 2K13 is launching on the 2nd October, so perhaps EA Sports didn't want to face direct competition.

NFL's Week 2 Secondary Ticket Price Trends: Steelers Hot, Jaguars Not

Based on some feedback from my friends at StubHub, here is a snapshot of secondary ticket price trends for Week 2 of the NFL season.? Secondary prices reported below reflect the price of tickets actually sold to date through StubHub.

HIGHEST-PRICED GAME?JETS @ STEELERS

The highest average secondary price is in Pittsburgh as the Steelers open their home schedule versus Mark Sanchez and the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets.? The average is $256, with 28% of the buyers coming from Pennsylvania, 13% from New York, 8% from New Jersey, and 6% from Ohio.? The highest priced ticket sold thus far was $988 in the lower bowl, with the lowest ticket sold being $88 in the upper bowl.

This is a sizable mark-up over the Steelers average face value price of $74.32, according to Team Marketing Report?s 2012 Fan Cost Index.? With the largest average secondary ticket price, yet face ticket values below the league?s $78.38 average, this tells us something we all probably already knew?FAN AVIDITY levels in Pittsburgh are tremendous.? And given the proximity of New York to Pittsburgh, and in light of their surprising offensive performance in Week 1 versus Buffalo, this helps raise demand which raises price.

LOWEST-PRICED GAME?TEXANS @ JAGUARS

The lowest average secondary price is in Jacksonville as the Jaguars battle the Houston Texans.? With the average secondary price for this game ($59) being essentially indifferent from the cheapest average face value ticket in football ($59.54), this suggests that it will take some time for the new regime in Jacksonville to turn around the degree of fan apathy which has befallen the club in recent years.

Further reflecting this apathy is that (1) this game has only received approximately 12,000 views since last Sunday (compared to the 125,000 page views since Sunday for the upcoming Detroit @ San Francisco showdown), (2) the most expensive seat sold was at $457 in the Touchdown Club, and (3) seats in Section 441 were selling for $15.

MOST TICKETS SOLD?LIONS @ 49ERS

As mentioned above, the Detroit v San Francisco Sunday night clash (fetching an average secondary price of $130 compared to 49er average face values of $83.54) is the most in demand game in terms of tickets sold for Week 2.

Though StubHub didn?t report the number of tickets sold, they indicated that some buyers hail from Hong Kong, Australia, Tokyo, and Madrid.? 80% of tickets sold have been to California residents.? The highest priced ticket sold was for $900 in the lower box sidelines, while the lowest priced ticket sold was $30 in the Upper Reserve North End Zone.

WEEK 2 MARK-UPS

The iPhone 5 and LTE _ what it means for you

(AP) ? The iPhone 5 is Apple's first mobile handset that uses new "LTE" wireless networks. What's LTE ?and why should you care? Here are some answers.

Q: What does LTE stand for?

A: It's "Long-Term Evolution," but that doesn't really tell you anything. It's actually the latest and fastest way to transmit data from cellular towers to phones and other gadgets. It's one of two so-called "fourth-generation," or 4G, wireless technologies that have been deployed by various phone companies. (The other one is WiMax, which is available on Sprint phones. But WiMax coverage is low, isn't being expanded, and even Sprint is betting on LTE for the future).

Q: How fast is LTE? Will it make a difference to me?

A: LTE networks in the U.S. reach speeds up to 20 megabits per second. That's faster than most people get at home, with their cable or DSL services. It's also faster than older wireless networks, but the differences aren't always that big. Sprint and Verizon iPhone users should see a huge jump in speed with the new iPhone because their 3G networks are relatively slow. Downloads will be more than ten times faster where LTE is available. For AT&T users, downloads speeds should double or triple.

Q: Which phone companies have LTE, and where can I get it?

A: Verizon Wireless launched its LTE network nearly two years ago. It has the widest coverage, by far: 370 cities. AT&T is second, with 62 cities. Sprint is only in the early stages of its buildout, and LTE coverage is spotty, for now. It covers 19 cities, mostly in Texas and Georgia. But Sprint has said that it plans to fire up New York, Washington, Boston, Los Angeles and some other cities in the next few months.

Q: My iPhone 4S already says it connects to "4G." Doesn't that mean LTE?

A: No, AT&T jumped the gun a bit and called its upgraded, non-LTE network "4G" because the speeds were so much higher than before. Apple went along with this, so the AT&T iPhone 4S displays "4G" in the status bar at the top of the screen even though it's connecting to a 3G network.

Q: Is the iPhone 5 the first LTE phone?

A: No, Apple hasn't been a trailblazer here. The first LTE phones showed up a year and a half ago, from other manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC. This year, it's become a standard feature in high-end smartphones.

Q: Verizon and AT&T have been using different types of networks. Now they're both on LTE. Does that mean I can move phones between the companies?

A: Unfortunately, no. They use different frequencies for LTE, and the iPhone 5 will come in two different versions. One connects to AT&T's LTE bands, the other to Sprint's and Verizon's. (There will be a third one for overseas LTE networks.)

Q: Is there any downside to LTE?

A: Not really, but as you go from 3G to LTE, you might want to keep a closer eye on your data consumption for a while. Surveys show people have higher data usage on LTE, possibly because it lets you download more stuff, faster. It also makes it easier to enjoy video streaming and videoconferencing. AT&T and Verizon now limit monthly data usage (in practice, even for people who have the old "unlimited" plans), while Sprint still provides unlimited data.

Early LTE phones had shorter battery lives, but the chips now draw less power, and Apple promises the same amount of effective use time on LTE as on older networks.

Q: Will the LTE capability mean anything for phone calls?

A: For now, LTE networks carry only data, so the iPhone 5 will use older networks when connecting calls. In the future, LTE will likely be used for calls as well, and it's possible that could mean improved audio quality. (Apple has its own scheme for improving audio quality, unrelated to LTE. But it's unclear if U.S. carriers will support it.)

British insurers set up fraud register as bogus claims rise

LONDON (Reuters) - British insurers on Thursday launched a register of insurance fraudsters after calculating that bogus claims rose 5 percent last year, adding 50 pounds to the average policyholder's bill.

The register is designed to help insurers identify fraudulent claims, easing a financial burden that has weighed on the industry's profits, the Association of British Insurers said.

"The register will make it easier for insurers to prevent fraud by making details of known fraudsters available to insurers through a secure protocol," said Richard Davies of the ABI's Financial Crime Committee.

"Those that defraud insurers and their honest customers face real and tangible consequences for their actions."

Insurers detected 139,000 bogus claims in 2011, saving themselves almost 1 billion pounds of payouts, according to the ABI.

Fraudulent motor insurance claims were the most costly, accounting for more than half the savings. British motor insurers say a steady rise in spurious or fraudulent claims has been a factor behind their suffering an underwriting loss every year since 1994.

According to the Insurance Fraud Bureau, an industry-funded body set up in 2006 to investigate dishonest claims, undetected fraud costs British insurers 2.1 billion pounds a year.

ABI members also pay for a 35-man police squad dedicated to tackling insurance fraud. The unit, which launched in January this year, costs the industry about 2.9 million pounds a year.

Britain's biggest home and motor insurers include Royal Bank of Scotland, Aviva, RSA, and Legal & General.

The week's biggest political news. Nope, not conventions.

Friday's unemployment report will be crucial for both presidential candidates. If the rate of unemployment drops, President Obama?s claim that we?re on the right track gains credibility. But if these numbers are moving in the wrong direction, Romney?s claim that? the nation needs a new start may gain traction.

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro addresses the the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012. Reich argues that regardless of which party wins the convention battle, the most telling political news this week will be the monthly jobs report for August.

If the trend is good ? if the rate of unemployment drops and the number of payroll jobs is as good if not better than it was in July ? President Obama?s claim we?re on the right track gains crucial credibility. But if these numbers are moving in the wrong direction, Romney?s claim the nation needs a new start may appear more credible.?

I don?t recall a time when these jobs numbers, compiled monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (a highly professional group whose findings are completely insulated from politics), were as politically significant as they?ll be this Friday, and the first Fridays in October and November.?

Yet these numbers are really crude approximations. They?re adjusted for seasonal variations ? based on historical data that may have less significance today, when the economy is still struggling to emerge from the worst downturn since the Great Depression. The numbers are also subject to corrections and revisions later, as more data come in.?

But perhaps the biggest flaw ? and irony ? is that when and if jobs really do start to return, many of the people who had been too discouraged to look for work start looking again. And when more people are looking, the rate of unemployment rises ? because that rate is based on the percent of Americans actively looking for work. Those who have stopped looking aren?t counted.

Nokia Lumia 920 official: Dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 8MP PureView camera, Windows Phone 8 (video)

Nokia Lumia 920 official Dualcore 15GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 8MP rear PureView camera, Windows Phone 8

It was only this past spring that Nokia crashed onto the US smartphone scene to stake its claim and make inroads into consumers' minds and hearts. Now, just five months later, the Finnish company's poised to overtake the buzz of its fledgling, former Windows Phone flagship, with what many consider to be a true high-end contender: the Lumia 920.

As one of the first Windows Phone 8 devices to be officially announced, this device augments Espoo's line with a larger, curved 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display, dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 CPU, 2,000mAh battery, NFC, integrated wireless charging and an 8-megapixel rear PureView camera capable of 1080p video. The display packs WXGA (1,280 x 768) resolution, is 25 percent brighter than the next best panel on the market and it's the fastest LCD that Nokia has ever shipped on a smartphone. What's more, the screen also boasts what Nokia calls "Super Sensitive Touch," which promises to let you use it even when wearing gloves or mitts.

As you can tell from its humpless back, this PureView is not that of the 41-megapixel variety -- it's merely all about the branding, as the moniker will now ring synonymous with "high-end cameras." Despite that fall from 808 grace, Nokia's Head of Imaging Damian Dinning has assured detractors the magic is in what's done with the optics and pixels and not sheer gargantuan sampling size. To wit, the 920 employs a "floating lens," which, in layman's terms, translates into hardware image stabilization and also packs impressive low-light capabilities -- an area the company's seems squarely focused upon.

In a true return to form, the 920 also hearkens back to the Lumia that started it all, opting for the "sinuous tapering" that debuted on the 800 with glass edges that blend gently into the polycarbonate hull. Unfortunately, not all of that design language has made the transition, given its chassis now appears glossier and more polished, distancing itself from that premium matte finish. Still, as looks go, the handset's keeping to its 900 origins, appearing nigh indistinct from its predecessor save for that attention-grabbing mellow yellow hue.And as a bonus, Nokia's imbued the device with integrated wireless charging, based on the Qi standard, which corroborates those leaks we saw just last week. The Lumia 920 will arrive in pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants and both are expected to ship "in selected markets" later this year.

Energy Efficient Windows: Insulating Connecticut Homes from Frigid ...

Connecticut is known for its climatic extremes: the interior has a humid continental climate, while the southern portions along the coast have a subtropical climate. This means that summers across all counties are generally hot to humid, while winters range from cold to severely cold. To counter such frigid winters, homeowners will need to have heaters installed in their homes and ensure that structural components like the siding, doors, roofs, and windows are well-insulated.

The local government has recognized the urgent need for heaters, and has implemented the Connecticut Energy Assistance Program. This program lends benefits to those who cannot adequately cover their energy bills. There's even a special clause that applies to those who "are unable to secure primary heat, causing a life-threatening situation." A bail of up to $530 in winter heating needs can be issued to those unfortunate enough to require such assistance.

But heaters will do no good if the house to be heated is structurally faulty. A house that fails to secure even its windows will not only be unable to keep the warm air in and the cold air out, but will hamper the installed heater's performance. In light of this, homeowners need to contact a reputable contractor to ensure that key structural components are viable enough to withstand the coming winter months; moreover, inspections may lead to repairs or replacements, depending on the needs.

The window replacement CT homeowners approve of is often performed before the frosty months roll in. What may appear as frivolous spending on new panes actually helps insulate the home, keeping the drafts out. The latest energy-efficient variants such as Low-E Smart Sun Glass is 76 percent more energy efficient than the standard insulated glass produced by other manufacturers, and can really keep those energy bills down.

On the other hand, it will take more than the replacement windows Connecticut locals want to put a stop to Jack Frost. To further insulate windows, components such as window films, rubber sealants, and draft snakes should be installed. Fortunately, most of these components are inexpensive, and can be easily installed.

Homeowners should seriously consider installing the replacement windows CT contractors offer. This and other aforementioned measures will help your family stay warm and toasty during the winter months, and may add some savings to your bank account. LINK

The New York Times' "Jim Rutenberg: " Democrats Say U.S. Is Better Off Than Four Years Ago" A day after fumbling a predictable and straightforward question posed by Mitt Romney last week - are Americans better off than they were four years ago - the Obama campaign provided a response on Monday that it said would be hammered home during the Democratic convention here this week: "Absolutely." LINK

Politico's Jennifer Epstein:" Democrats Release Platform" The Democratic Party released its platform on Monday night, laying out positions on issues ranging from health care to lobbying reform and ending the war in Afghanistan. The party's support of same-sex marriage was well-reported earlier this summer, but most of the other positions outlined in the document are aligned with longstanding Democratic views. LINK

PRESIDENT OBAMA

USA Today's Susan Page: " Interview: Obama says GOP drawing 'a fictional Barack Obama'" President Obama says he's older and wiser than he was during the heady 2008 campaign, and he has a more complicated message urging voters to stick with him as the country slowly digs out of "a very deep hole" on the economy. So is the election less fun, the second time around? LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Laura Meckler: " Obama to Press Case For Four More Years" With Republicans trying to fan disappointment with President Barack Obama's leadership, Democrats begin the final run to the election with a convention beginning here Tuesday that aims to convince economically struggling voters the president has a workable plan for a turnaround.
